HTC one M9 test: The HTC's flagship leaves mixed impression
The new HTC one M9 looks at first glance like its predecessor one M8, brings a moderate technical changes and costs just $70 more. Is this enough for a flagship Smartphone by 2015? We have extensively tested the HTC one M9 with the final firmware and experienced a surprising behavior of the Snapdragon 810 in the test.

Housing design and processing
The Mobile World Congress 2015 was dominated by two devices: the Samsung Galaxy S6 (edge) and the HTC one M9, that's at stake in the test. While the Samsung Smartphone already on the mobile fair garnered praise, the one M9 heated tempers, since outside it almost looks like its predecessor, technically it is only partially better than the one M8 as in the trade, it is about 70 euros more expensive. Not enough or sufficient for a new generation? Somehow something's on two arguments.

HTC by one M8 has acquired in the test. Once again the manufacturer uses a unibody metal, which looks really chic on the back with the HTC a anodized lettering. However the back and the side panels is over at the one M9 light, so that a small level creates and acts on the front. From the front you can see lot of high-quality metal and noticed a flawless finish, if also like at the one M8 large margins above and below the display, which are dictated by the strong boom sound speakers. The broad black stripe below the display, which is adorned by the HTC logo, seems to have no function but otherwise wasted space, however, - we have criticised this already with the predecessor model.

There is but slight differences, even though the notice only in the direct comparison of the two models M8 and M9: so the HTC one M9 is somewhat more compact and has risen in comparison only on the thickness of the case. In length, HTC reduced the new one M9 in the test by scarce two millimeters in width to about a millimeter and the manufacturer saves three grams in weight. This are all not awe-inspiring numbers, but rather show how little room HTC in the miniaturization had. The slightly lesser extent noticeable positive yet, such as the narrow edge of the left and right of the display, because it looks fresh and modern. At a housing thickness the one M9 in comparison to the one M8 sales increase minimally, to 0.3 mm, - this increase is not to feel while keeping the phones in hand. The 20-megapixel camera on the back of the HTC smartphones not excessively protrude from the housing, but almost plan is flush with the back. With its predecessor, this is however still more elegantly solved: here the lens doesn't look good at all. The camera lens of one M9 is square, so the unit is firmly free on the rounded back.

The form of the HTC one M9 in the test is something edgier than the here "soft-washed" one M8 very pleasantly situated in the hand on the rear sides. The light cutting edge that separates back rear end, makes more striking and again something nobler and more modern the one M9. In your hand you can certainly tell, the edges are disturbing but not. In contrast to its predecessor, the one M9 is not plain, but HTC provides the pages with a subtle accent color. Our test device is a subtle Golden hue, which stands out from the remaining silver brushed finish depending on the viewing angle. Like this is of course a matter of personal taste.

The right power button however represents a real improvement, the right-handed now, achieve in one hand mode without to dislocate the finger. The IR Blaster, which is integrated into the one M8 in the power button is located at the one M9 on the front side under a black plastic cover. From an ergonomic point of view a distribution of two separate volume buttons and the power buttons on both sides of the casing of the HTC one M9 would have been useful, instead of mapping all three buttons on the right side with each other. Then you would not always accidentally press the volume up button instead of the on / off button.

Have one M7 and M8 one already standards for the quality of the workmanship used so the one M9 in the test puts it even more a - through the very delicate holes in the cover of the powerful boom sound speakers. By the way: The HTC one M9 is protected by IPx3 standard against moisture. Not - but it is waterproof as does the Samsung Galaxy S6.

Higher, faster, further - not so with HTC. The Taiwanese manufacturer again opts for so 1920 x 1080 pixels for the one M9 in the test an IPS LCD with 5 inch and full HD resolution. It does not need anymore actually also, finally, already a visible high image definition provides the screen with 441 pixels per inch (PPI) and require more processor power more pixels on the screen and provide higher power consumption. Unlike a 2 k-resolution and nearly 590 PPI, as it offers the new S6 of the Galaxy, is barely visible, especially as the AMOLED display of the Samsung smartphones of less sub pixel offers and has so computationally even a slightly lower image sharpness.

The display of the HTC one M9 in the test scores excellently on the vision test and the measurement values. Blur is not to discover the viewing angle stability is outstanding, even if with increasingly flatter if angle - like in every LCD - shading occurs. Also a slight color change is visible, which affects but not annoying. Slightly higher than the previous model, and with a contrast of almost 750:1 and a brightness of about 430 cd / m ² is really see the screen let the color temperature of the M9 display. He is the grayscale with a deviation from the reference value of 7.3 Delta E within the acceptable range, color accuracy with 4.3 Delta E even close to the optimum.
